SHAG History
Formed 20 years ago, the Senior Housing Assistance Group (SHAG) has become the largest non-profit provider of affordable rental apartment communities for low- and moderate income seniors in the Puget Sound region. With a total of more than 4,100 affordable apartments, SHAG has enriched the lives of thousands of seniors in over 27 locations in communities from Bellingham to Olympia, including, of course, Seattle.
In the early 1990s, SHAG's first several affordable rental apartment communities for seniors ranged in size from 24 to 100 units, located mainly suburban settings in South King County. SHAG's focus at that time was addressing the basic housing needs of seniors, with an emphasis on affordability. In the mid-1990s, on the strength of the demand for its early affordable rental apartment communities and the recognition of the demographic shift occurring in the U.S. in terms of the rapid growth of the elderly population, SHAG with the help of several other non-profit and for-profit development partners, initiated an aggressive growth plan to develop larger affordable rental apartment communities to serve more low and moderate income seniors in diverse communities throughout Western Washington
