March 2008

With the unusually early arrivals of both daylight saving time and Easter, we're just slightly off-schedule!  We present you with updates on SHAG communities and new information that we hope you will be able to use.

New and Different!

The wait is over!  Our newest SHAG community, Cedar Park in Lake City, opened at the beginning of March.  This community has 206 apartments on six floors, with all of the fine amenities that SHAG residents have come to expect in our newest properties.  Along with the sunrooms, media center, computers, exercise room and community room, the building sports a nine-hole miniature golf course on the room, woven amongst the 20 pea-patch raised gardens planters.  When you're in Lake City, please come by for a tour!

We haven't really mentioned it as yet, but we are hard at work in the development stages of another new community, this one in southern West Seattle.  Arrowhead Gardens will have 449 units when it is complete (to be opened in phases), within a four-building campus that will include a dentral community center and beautiful, environmentally-friendly landscaping.  Other details will come to you as the project continues on its development track.

Those are the two properties that come under the "New" headline, so what is the "Different" headline about?  We have given Washington Terrace a new name and logo!  It is now known as The Terrace, simplifying its identity, with all of the same great features and benefits.  Now is the time to come and take a look!  We have an active group of people living at The Terrace.  In fact, our residents have had recent trips to the Seattle Aquarium, the Fifth Avenue theater's backstage, a tour behind the scenes at Safeco Field, and they have taken a harbor cruise as well.  If youare interested in moving into this community, we are interested in having you as a resident of this vibrant, vital living environment!

Giving Opportunity

We have had a loose affiliation with Northwest Harvest since December 2007.  On a small scale, several of our communities combined to donate 1155 pounds of food the their food bank on Christmas Eve, much to the delight of the volunteers at the Northwest Harvest warehouse.  We are working to solidify that relationship, since hunger knows no season, and we have a caring, contributing group of residents.  As we move further into 2008, we intend to have collection boxes at several of our communities.  If non-residents wish to donate, we will welcome you as you stop by to drop off food.  Some of our communities have been connected with Hopelink, another food bank organization that serves portions of King County.  Those communities will continue their relationships with existing partners.

Speaking of past charitable endeavors, we recently learned that an employee of one of our vendors was in Iraq with the Third Stryker Brigade from Fort Lewis.  He was on hand when the Operation Support Our Troops supplies arrived at Christmas and recalls the great feelings among the soldiers when the SHAG and OSOT materials were handed out.

Qualification Changes

If you haven't visited our home page lately, please do so.  Our income eligibility levels were increased as of late February.  They vary by county, so we urge you to look at the specifice community in which you have an interest in order to determine their income levels and corresponding rental rates.

Other Items Of Interest

Residents of Webster Court in Kent have come up with a great way of staying in shape.  They have formed the Webster Walkers, a group that has agreed to walk together inside the community.  One diligent member determined that it takes 10 trips through the entire corridor of one floor to make a mile.  Typically, seven to ten people participate, going as far as they can and at their own speed so there is no pressure to perform to a certain level.  How many of you have formed similar groups?  We would like to hear from you!

We had the opportunity to participate in the Active Senior Fair held recently in Bellevue, where we were able to introduce SHAG to over 500 attendees, many of whom knew or our company and our affordable housing options.  As you learn of similar expos in your area, we encourage you to attend.  These expos usually have a wide variety of vendors of services to seniors, and there is always something to learn.  In fact, SHAG will be represented at the Everett Elder Fair in May, an event that attracts some 700 to 800 people each year.

Spotlight on The Terrace

Our focus continues on TheTerrace and the fine urban living option it provides to people over the age of 61.  A variety of programs being developed by the residents for the residents has all the hallmarks of making this a truly vibrant community.  Our own SHAG residents are encouraged to refer qualified prospective residents to The Terrace.

The Terrace's delightful water feature in the main courtyard offers a soothing place to relax.

This community's views are just as stunning today as ever.  Please call 206-516-7901 for information on rates and availability.

Innovative architectural features give The Terrace its distinctive appearance.

We continue to solicit interesting stories from or about our residents to share with our entire population.  If you have an item to submit, please email to them to billf@housing4seniors.com.
